Yesterday was a miserable, wet, dis agreeable, rainy day, in consequence ot which a good many were deterred from attending .church, especially at the night service. The passenger and freight traffic on the several railroads leading into the city is unusually large. The Southern bound passenger traffic is very large equal to if not exceeding that of any previous year. The graded schools resumed their sessions this morning and the teachers and pupils, who have had the recrea tion and pleasure ot the Christmas and New Year holidays, have recommenced their duties and studies. Watrous, of Clinton, Conn., died at the Carroll Hotel, at Lake Waocamaw. Columbus county, at about 3 o'clock this morning. The de ceased bad been afflicted for some time with that dread disease, consumption, aDd came South with the hope that our softer and more genial climate might prove beneficial, but he came too lute. He was about 38 years of ag-, and his remains will be taken to his late home in Connecticut tor interment. A Wedded Pair. The Goldaboro Workman says: "Mr. Charles H. Fisher, we'.l known here but for some time psst of Colum bia, S. C, reached this place yesterday, with his bride, nee Miss Thompson, of Smilhville, N. C, to whom he was married last Tuesday, and is spending some time at the Benbow House. His friends, who are very many, give him and his bride hearty greeting." The lady referred to is Miss Lillie. the beautiful and accomplished daugh ter of Capt. T. M. Thompson, a young lady who has many warm friends and admirers in. this city, some of whomy we fear, are left disconsolate. The marriage ceremony took place at Capt. Pursuant to adjournment a joint meeting of the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of New Hanover coun ty was held at the Court House at 10 o'clock this morning, and was called to order by Dr, W. V. Harriss, Chair man, who stated the object of the call. In the call of the roll 30 justices an swered to their names. C. H. Robinson, J. P., offered the following resolution : Resolved. That we try to get a Criminal Circuit, and failing in that. the Criminal Court to remain as it cow is: Whereupon John S. James, J. P., offered, as an amendment That the Criminal Count of New Hanover county be continued as it now is. The following amendment to the amendment of J. S. James, J. P., was offered by E D. Hall, J. P. Resolved, That it is the opinion of this meeting that a criminal court is a measure of necessity for New Hanover county; but in view ot the fact that all of the costs of the present court fall heavily on the tax-payers otthe county, that the County Commissioners be requested to have the county of New Hanover put in a Criminal Circuit. Carried. J. L, Cautwell, J. P., offered the fol lowing resolution : Resolved, That it is the sense of this meeting that the officers of the Crim inal Court of New Hanover county, in the discharge of their duties, deserve and have our hearty commendation.
